If you don't care, Don't call me!

I’ve come to realize that my deep concern for humanity, and the lack of it I see around me, means I have to step away from certain “friendships.” The only people I want in my life are those who genuinely care about others. You don’t have to agree with everyone, but being human means respecting and valuing human life.

The people I want around me are those willing to fight, boycott, speak up, or even just re-share something in the name of liberty and justice for ALL, not just some. I’m tired of making excuses for people who refuse to care. I’m tired of trying to convince or educate those who remain willfully ignorant. If your world is so small, so self-centered, that you can’t extend compassion or even empathy beyond yourself, then you are not my friend.

I don’t want to share my life with people who turn a blind eye to injustice. People who don’t care about families being ripped apart, sent “back” to countries they fled from, while standing on occupied and stolen land themselves. People who can look at the horrors of war, a baby's lifeless body covered in rubble missing their head, and feel nothing. People who shrug when others’ rights are stripped away simply because it doesn’t affect them. Those who think they have a say over my body, or anyone else’s. Those who don’t care that we are destroying our planet. Who remain unfazed by the fact that our schools, where our children are supposed to be safe, are being shot up, forcing kids to practice shooter drills as routinely as fire drills.

Does that not concern you? Have we become so numb, so selfish, that nothing else in this world matters but ourselves?

I don’t want people like that around me.

I want to be surrounded by people who care, who remind each other how we can be of service to one another. People who want to build a community rooted in love, compassion, and empathy. That’s what I want.

We, the people, have made billionaires into billionaires. We have that power. We are the ones who give, so we are the ones who can take back.

A single drop of water may seem insignificant, it can’t even move a grain of rice. But an ocean? It can tear apart anything in its path.

You are a drop of water in a vast ocean.

It’s time to come together, to support each other, to show up for those who need us. If you’re not ready for that, move aside for someone who is.

Love,

Mariam The Happy Heblah
